Trend Report | Dark & Dramatic

October 28, 2021

Bold and powerful, darker tile looks can bring both drama and sophistication to any setting.

Shades of black tile can add just the right amount of edge and moodiness to a space, while remaining timeless and chic. Floors, backsplashes, accent walls, or fireplaces, we offer an assortment of black tile in a variety of shapes, patterns, and finishes to meet all your dark design palette dreams! Keep reading to discover five ways to use dark tile in your next design.

black tile for a dark and dramatic look

#1. Bold Bathrooms

A powder room or master bath is the perfect spot to go bold and add some personality to your design. Black tile pairs beautifully with natural wood accents, and light neutral colors. These complementary tones will soften and bring warmth to rooms featuring dark tile.

Our wildly popular Passion collection now comes in 9” x 9” size and in a rich Nero color. This stunning glazed porcelain is completely on trend with its handcrafted look and its impressive color variation.

Inspired by one of the world’s oldest building materials, our Brique series elevates the look to new heights. Available in Charcoal, this durable glazed porcelain tile makes a bold statement when used in a bathroom setting. Rich and textural, Brique helps achieve a modern industrial look.

#2. Kitchen Backsplash

Bring the heat to the kitchen with a dark backsplash. You can keep your kitchen space bright and homey when coordinated with textured wood cabinets, rich metal hardware, and light tones for appliances and décor. Raku in Charcoal and Euphoria in Ore are two smoky backsplash options that offer a unique twist on popular subway tile styles. Euphoria provides a high-end, art deco look, while Raku can help achieve a classic yet contemporary look.

#3. Pattern Play

Add more interest and dimension to your space with patterned tiles. We have collections in a variety of shapes, and options with diverse textures and finishes. Patterned tile works in many design scenarios to create dynamic and captivating rooms.

Our new Mythos collection comes in three attention-grabbing shapes, perfect for mosaic backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms.

Kumito and Rhythm are just two more examples of textured tiles (pictured below) that elevate traditional tile shapes with geometric details and unique gloss and matte finishes.

#4 Fierce Floors

While pale grays and neutral colors remain popular, there’s a renewed interest in contrast. Floors are the perfect areas to add a dark design element to your space for a timeless air of elegance. Our Building Blocks™ Wood Yakedo series, designed in collaboration with Gensler as a product design consultant, beautifully replicates the look of burnt cedar in a glazed porcelain plank.

Based on the Shou Sugi Ban technique, or slight burning before installation, the worn textures create a certain dimension and strength. The way it reflects light from its crackled texture brings sophisticated movement and visual intrigue to interiors. Yakedo is available in three dark and luxurious hues: Charcoal, Black, and Navy. The Building Blocks collection also features coordinating concrete and metal looks with several shades, colors, sizes and textures, all designed to complement one another.

Inspired by the look of molten metal, Ironworx in Carbon adds style and sophistication to a floor space, especially when paired with lighter-colored walls. The six striking colors and multiple sizes and patterns can be mixed and matched to achieve a contrasting look.

#5 Outdoors

For your outdoor walls, accent walls or fireplaces, try textured tile in rich, dark tones for a warm and cozy vibe. The unique design of our Connect series, provides the appearance of stacked stone in a durable glazed porcelain tile. The texture and variation found on this tile perfectly captures the beautiful characteristics of natural stone and provides a sense of balance to any application.
